What is reflexology?

Reflexology in Columbus Ohio is the systematic application of pressure techniques to the feet and hands. The nerve pathways in each foot create an electrochemical flow that communicates with the entire nervous system.

Each reflex point connects with a specific organ, gland or body part. Through the application of pressure using specific thumb and finger techniques, reflexology connects with the peripheral nervous system and encourages the body to relax and return to homeostasis or balance.

Reflexology is often valued highly due to the positive effects its application has on various ailments and injuries. Reflexology is a form of alternative medicine that encourages a non-invasive, natural healing process. Applied through the hands, feet, and ears, reflexology can give you pain relief without negative side-effects.

History of Reflexology
Reflexology has been around for thousands of years. The first concrete evidence it was used in healing was found in Egyptian pictographs from around 2500 B.C. Reflexology was introduced in the United States in 1913, by Dr.William Fitzgerald who was an ear, nose and throat specialist. He claimed that by applying pressure on particular places on the hands and feet [zone therapy], an anesthetic effect would take place in areas of the body. A nurse and physiotherapist, Eunice Ingham, made further investigations in the 1930′s and 1940′s and mapped the entire body into reflexes on the feet. Eunice Ingham is considered the Mother of Reflexology in the United States.

Today Reflexology is usually taught in a school environment, with a core curriculum and professional standards. Most schools offer a Certification in Reflexology and encourage students to pursue National Certification. Workshops and continuing education classes are offered all over the world for practicing Reflexologists. In some countries, Reflexology is offered in hospitals and medical practices as a natural healing method.
